Summary: This presentation is geared toward those who have never attempted to read Latin church records, especially those from the 17th and 18th centuries, and will focus primarily on baptismal and burial records. Kasia will cover the basic structure of these records and build attendees’ confidence through hands-on examples, showing that prior experience isn’t required to start extracting valuable information from them. Using visual aids, she will walk through the building blocks of the records found in many parish record books, with examples drawn from areas that are now part of Poland. The presentation will close with final tips and takeaways.
About our speaker: Kasia Dane is a long-time genealogical and family researcher who has branched out to transcribing and indexing historical records. In the past 25 years, she has contributed about half a million record entries to sites such as Geneteka and Family Search, as well as posting some on her own web pages in the past. She is largely self-taught, both in transcribing and in learning just enough foreign words to extract the main information from historical records such as birth, marriage, and death records. She is a member of PGSNYS and other Polish genealogical societies.
