“Introduction to Genealogical DNA”
Many of us are beyond the intro phase and more interested in how to use our DNA matches, but some people are just getting started and need the basics. I start with what DNA is, how it is inherited, the risks and benefits of testing, and where to test. Using examples from my own family, I show how you can use your DNA results to inform your family history research.
About the Speaker
Sandra Maciejewski Porter has written articles for the PGSNYS journal Searchers about her study of her ancestors and their families in the Prussian (German) and Russian partitions of Poland and connections to her DNA cousins. She lives in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and blogs about her discoveries at myfamilyhistoryresearch. No date has been decided for this presentation, later in 2022
“Collaborating with DNA Matches: Finding a Common Location Using a Variety of Sources.”
I tell the story of how we found the ancestors of my distant DNA cousins in the old country—the clues we found along the way, the puzzles we solved, and the resources we used to find the Polish names of my DNA match’s immigrant ancestors, their immigration records, their marriage in the old country, and their parents’ names and records, all in places close to where my immigrant great- grandparents were married in 1869.
